Although I’m not sure if a Beck song can be a guilty pleasure, ‘Wow’ feels like a guilty pleasure with its hip-hop bass, anthemic piano and smattering of mainstream lyrics (“it’s your life/ you’ve got to try to get it right / look around don’t forget where you came from”)
That said, “Wow” is something of a distillation of everything I love about mid-naughties to present hip-hip-pop songs (also see ‘Fergalicious‘). There’s something melancholic about the beat and the vocals despite the content on paper being the same as a party anthem.
And also I love the video.
