John Grant – ‘Black Belt’

pale-green-ghosts

Since the last time I wrote about John Grant, I’ve listened to Pale Green Ghost and Grey Tickles, Black Pressure. And I must say, I’m very impressed. As a gay dude, it’s refreshing to listen to another gay dude producing interesting, visceral and catchy music. Do you know how rare it is for a guy to sing about a(n ex-)partner using male pronouns? Extremely.

‘Black Belt’ is a breakup song about Grant’s ex-boyfriend (who seemingly provides him with some of his best creative fuel, and by the sounds of it a total dick). ‘Black Belt’ is angry and childish (the lyrics are almost a schoolyard chant). It’s also really funny and after every line I want to add “someone call an ambulance because YA BURNT, SON”.
