Gwen Guthrie – ‘Ain’t Nothin’ Goin’ on But the Rent’

Ain't_Nothin'_Gwen_Guthrie

Bill collector’s at my door
What can you do for me?

If there’s one thing that can sum up everything I love about women in the 80’s (or at least their legacy), it’s embodied in this song. I always picture an 80’s business woman with massive shoulder pads saying the most 80’s-est hook:

No romance without finance

And:

You got to have a J. O. B.
If you wanna be with me

And:

I will have to avoid
You if you’re unemployed

I also really like the production of his song, especially in longer versions. There’s something about the bass-line that’s aged very well.
